Note: Ramadan dates shift approximately 10 days earlier each Gregorian year. In 2026, Ramadan is expected to begin around 18 February. In 2027, around 8 February.

The Ideal Windows: November to February

For most UK pilgrims, November through early February (outside Ramadan and December school holidays) offers the best balance. Daytime temperatures range from a pleasant 28°C to 31°C, making Tawaf and Sa’i far more comfortable than during summer months when the marble courtyard can exceed 50°C. Evenings are cool and perfect for outdoor dining near the Haram.

Hotel rates during these months fall into the budget-to-mid-range bracket. You can often find a 4-star hotel within 400 metres of the Haram for under £90 per night. Flights from London and Manchester are widely available at competitive rates, particularly if you book 8-12 weeks in advance.

Ramadan: The Most Rewarding, But Most Expensive

Performing Umrah during Ramadan carries immense spiritual reward — the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said Umrah in Ramadan is equivalent to Hajj in reward. However, it comes with significant practical challenges:

Summer Months: Budget-Friendly But Thermally Challenging

June through September sees the lowest hotel rates of the year, but temperatures regularly exceed 40°C. If you choose a summer Umrah, plan your Tawaf for early morning (before 9 AM) or late evening (after Isha), stay at a hotel within 200 metres of the Haram to minimise walking in heat, and hydrate constantly. The upside is that you will have far more space during rituals and can find incredible last-minute flight deals.

UK School Holiday Considerations

If you are travelling with children, the December winter break, February half-term, and Easter holidays are popular but pricier. Booking during the first week of a school holiday is typically cheaper than the peak middle week. October half-term can be an excellent compromise: moderate temperatures, manageable crowds, and prices that have not yet climbed to winter peak levels.

Our Recommendation

For first-time pilgrims, November or January is the sweet spot. You will enjoy comfortable weather, moderate prices, and crowds small enough to perform rituals with focus and tranquillity. Experienced pilgrims seeking spiritual intensity should aim for the first 20 days of Ramadan, when the atmosphere is electric but the extreme congestion of the last 10 nights has not yet set in.
