Umrah vs Hajj — What is the Difference and Which Should You Do?

Comparison · June 2026 · 5 min read

Many UK Muslims ask: “Should I do Umrah first or wait until I can perform Hajj?” The two pilgrimages are deeply connected but fundamentally different in obligation, timing, rituals, and practical demands. Here is a clear comparison to help you decide.

Rituals in More Detail

Umrah Rituals (4 Core Acts)

Umrah consists of entering the state of Ihram at the Miqat, performing Tawaf (seven circuits around the Kaaba), performing Sa’i (walking seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah), and concluding with Halq (shaving the head for men) or Taqsir (trimming a small amount of hair for women). The entire set of rituals can be completed in under four hours.

Hajj Rituals (Multiple Acts Over 5-6 Days)

Hajj is far more extensive. After entering Ihram, pilgrims travel to Mina on the 8th of Dhul Hijjah. The pinnacle is Wuquf at Arafat on the 9th — standing in prayer and supplication from midday to sunset on the plain of Arafat, considered the essence of Hajj. Pilgrims then spend the night at Muzdalifah under the open sky, collect pebbles, and proceed to Rami (symbolic stoning of the Jamarat). Qurbani (sacrifice), Tawaf Al-Ifadah, and additional days of stoning and Tawaf follow before the pilgrimage is complete.

Spiritual Significance

Both pilgrimages carry immense reward. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Umrah to Umrah is an expiation for what is between them, and Hajj Mabrur has no reward but Paradise.” (Bukhari and Muslim). Hajj holds the higher status because it is a pillar of Islam, but Umrah performed with sincerity is a profound act of worship in its own right. Scholars note that Umrah in Ramadan carries the reward of Hajj (but does not fulfil the obligation).

Which Should You Do First?

For the vast majority of UK Muslims, our recommendation is: perform Umrah first, then plan for Hajj when you are ready. Here is why:

If you have the financial means and physical health and have never been, do not delay Umrah. It is a journey that will transform your iman and prepare you spiritually and practically for the greater obligation of Hajj when your time comes.
